Hoboken Parks & Dog Runs
Please note, by law, dogs must be kept on leash (six feet in length) in all public spaces in Hoboken, except in city dog runs. And, sadly, no dogs are allowed on grass or unpaved areas within city parks or the waterfront walkway. Here is a link to the city's municipal codes on dogs and other animals.
The "no-dogs-on-grass" rule is periodically enforced by the city's Health Department, parks officials and police officers; disregard this rule at your own risk. Fines can be substantial.
The HDA has advocated for a revision of this ordinance, similar to policies in certain parks in New York City, which allow dogs to play on the grass before 9 am and after 9 pm, but our requests have been met with resistance on the part of the city. With a strong show of support across a broad base of citizens, and responsible behavior by dog owners to maintain clean and healthy lawn areas, we may eventually achieve this goal.
Hoboken Dog Park Users, Please:
- Carry a leash.
- Carry pick-up bags.
- Pick up and dispose of dog waste promptly.
- Enjoy dog-run conversations, but ALWAYS keep a watchful eye on your dog.
- If you see someone not picking up after their dog, politely remind them to do so.
- Do not leave dogs unattended.
- Do NOT bring aggressive dogs into the dog run.
- Control excessive noise.
- Prevent digging and destructive behavior.
- Dispose of litter and cigarette butts in trash cans.
- Obey the law - Sorry, no dogs on the grass.

Interior Parks:
Thanks to the efforts of the HDA, the City equipped its three dog runs with tool bins and a water supply (Summer 2004) and installed a separate area for small dogs only at the Church Square run (May 2005). We continue to work with the City on improving conditions in the runs, including constructing permanent shelters and improved care of the surfaces and drainage.
