The Hoboken Dog Association was founded in 2000, not long after the city of Hoboken passed restrictive ordinances prohibiting dog owners from allowing their dogs on the grass or any other part of city parks except sidewalks, and only when going directly to and from a city dog run.
The group advocated with city officials for improvements, including installation of water fountains in the dog runs and better maintenance of the surfaces, while forging bonds among the dog-owning community. From our earliest days, we have promoted responsible behavior among our fellow dog owners, including cleaning up after our pets and respecting our neighbors' personal property (including their trash cans) and their peace from habitual barking.
Today, Hoboken has been recognized by magazines and newspapers as one of the dog-friendliest cities in New Jersey. Here, dog owners enjoy over a mile of waterfront walkway; miles of safe, tree-lined streets; dog-friendly sidewalk cafes; and many excellent dog walkers and trainers, doggie daycare and boarding facilities, and well-stocked pet-supply shops.
Over the years, the group has rallied dog owners in the city with fun events, continued to promote responsible dog ownership and raised funds for dog rescue organizations. The HDA, which is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with an all-volunteer board, continues to serve as a resource for connecting dog owners, and as a channel for advocacy for improving conditions in Hoboken.
Volunteers are always welcome. Please contact us if you are interested in helping organize events or getting involved.
